November backyard with snow

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

What a difference a week has made! It seems our autumn has suddenly turned to winter. The red maple (Acer rubrum) leaves, back lit by the morning sun, look much the same as last week. However, an inch of snow has given the garden an entirely different look.

Red maple leaves and snow

I ventured out long enough to get this photograph. Since our outside temperature was 15° F, I was soon glad to enjoy the view from inside.

It’s still autumn. Can we hope for some mild November days? Or is this the beginning of a long, hard winter? Only time will tell.

  1. was this shot taken at twilight? with perhaps a house light on the tree that still has it’s leaves (styrax, you said). Very evocative composition.

    1. Maryann, thanks for your feedback, however you give me far too much credit. The photograph was taken about 8:30 a.m. with early sun back-lighting only the leaves.

  2. WOW Betty – What a difference indeed, that one week has made! Brrrrrr, 15 degrees Fahrenheit sounds rather cold to me!
But, what a beautiful photograph of the red maple, just stunning with the sun shining through the leaves. Would make a
wonderful Christmas card. Temperatures in the U.K. are still very high for this time of year, and are due to stay like that
until the New Year. So, no white Christmas this year!
