Birds and snow – fun videos

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Our cold, snowy weather continued this past weekend, and I was glad to watch our birds from indoors. I decided to try the video feature on my camera, and was pleasantly surprised with the results. My son (and webmaster) then uploaded the videos to YouTube. This one gives you a good idea of the weather and the challenge for our feathered friends.

Note: click the bottom-right corner of the video to display it in full screen mode. Press the “Esc” key to exit full screen mode.

The night before the snow, I put some black walnut hulls in a wheelbarrow near the window. It was fun to watch the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) moving the snow to discover small peices of nuts.

It was fun to experiment with video as a different way of documenting our everyday world. I wonder if I can use it with butterflies?

  1. Thank you Betty for the lovely video of our feathered friends. I have really been concerned for them during the recent very cold temperatures!

    1. Yes, Ann, they are charming and I’m delighted to have them as neighbors. I can hardly wait to hear them calling again.

  2. Great job Betty! I would say this was a very successful experiment. It looks promising for shooting butterflies. What kind of camera do you have?

    1. Ruth, I was using a Canon SX50. I would call it a sophisticated point-and-shoot camera. It’s lightweight with a great zoom. I bought it with birding in mind and so far, am liking it.
